Educational presentation given in auditorium By Mike Ricci Editor Armstrong School students were taken far back into time last week when Tony Skauge of the Science Museum of Minnesota spoke to the kids about the history of the earth s water. At the very beginning of the educational assembly held Thursday April he asked the students how long water has been around which prompted a variety of answers with a couple coming very close. Skauge informed the students that the earth s water has been around for approximately four and a half billion years. This was put into perspective by using a visual aid. The Watonwan County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the event to help students become more aware of water conservation and the effect that water has on our environment Skauge said. Armstrong students jumped at the chance to actively participate in a brief demonstration Thursday April . A representative of the Science Museum of Minnesota visited the school last week to! teach the students about the history of the earth s water. And Skauge accomplished this by addressing several different areas. During the program I cover a variety of topics including environmental issues associated with water water misuse and conservation and local water availability and pollution Skauge said. His approach to educating the students involved participation and according to Skauge the participation that day was great. The participation at Armstrong was fantastic he said. All of the students were very engaged in the topic and really excited to participate. It really makes the program a lot of fun when you get so many students actively involved in learning and having a good time. Skauge said he was also impressed by the prior knowledge of the students. He said that many were able to tell him unique and interesting facts associated with water in and around the St. James area. The students at Armstrong were a fantastic audience and that is credit not only to the! students but also to the teachers at Armstrong that are obviously doing a phenomenal job.
